Chocolate milk ? really. We swear by it ? so much that we stock our mini fridge for clients.
When we?ve shown you no mercy and you?ve worked out to capacity at O3 (Remember, failure IS an option!), you need to add back the right combinations of carbs and protein for quick recovery. Drinking an 8-ounce box after a workout builds muscle, reduces fat, and improves performance, according to new research.
?When recovering from exercise, two things you want to do is replenish sugar stores in the muscles and turn on protein synthesis and stop protein breakdown,? explains John L. Ivy, PhD, department chair of kinesiology and health education at the University of Texas in Austin.
Through his research, Ivy has found that the unique combination of carbohydrate and protein in chocolate milk work synergistically to do those two things. And low-fat chocolate milk has a better carbohydrate-protein mix than carb-loaded sports drinks, which tend to be higher in carbs (sugars) with no protein.
Now the choco box seems less of an indulgence and more of a necessity.
So you?ve got a great reason to act like a kid and reach for the yummy milk. We keep them cold and sell them for $2 each.? Instead of looking to a coffee or sports drink for recovery, treat yourself after a tough workout to chocolate milk ? and discover how fast you feel restored!
