Secure Wealth By Investing In Oil And Gas Businesses | Arty Apt

In order for an individual to truly become wealthy, they should in invest their money in good investments. Individuals can get superb investment returns if they invest in oil and gas. Some individuals choose not to investment money the way they are supposed to, and they end up spending for it once they get older and are not able to physically work to make an earnings. Investing is incredibly important, even if a person doesn?t believe they have spare money to invest with. If an individual doesn?t have adequate money to invest with, they must cut back on other charges, specifically if a person qualifies to be an authorized investor. If an individual qualifies to be an accredited investor, it indicates they either make $200,000 a year, or they?ve a value of at least $1,000,000.

Why Gas and oil Is a Good Investment

When a person makes an investment in oil and gas, they?re making a great investment because they?re investing in something that?s very stable. The oil and gas sector is not just like technology industry that changes each year. In the technology industry, goods and technology services advance and decline rapidly. The gas and oil industry has been nearly the very same for centuries. New technology sometimes arises to assist the industry make progress, but change is generally infrequent in this industry. If an individual chooses to invest in oil and gas, they generally do not need to fear change wiping out their investment.

Caused by the stability of the oil and gas industry, once an individual makes an investment into a good business , the profits they receive from the company are reputable. Investors who invest in all of these types of businesses could receive a never-ending way to obtain divided checks. Firms in this industry are always rewarding. Doing good times, and bad times, oil and gas companies make a profit. These firms are recession proof.

Once a person is seeking something to invest in, they should only search for things to invest in which are stable and pay investors regular profits. If investors just concentrate on these kinds of investments, they?ll get satisfactory returns, without having to be worried about their investments. If a person qualifies to be an authorized investor, they can put money into gas and oil companies unavailable to the general population to invest in. Such investments lead to bigger profits than normal for sensible investors.

Harvard researcher finds the use of traditional, natural medicines offer economic benefits

For millions of people around the world being sick doesn't mean making a trip to the local pharmacy for medicines like Advil and Nyquil. Instead it means turning to the forest to provide a pharmacopeia of medicines to treat everything from tooth aches to chest pains.

But while questions persist about whether such natural remedies are as effective as their pharmacological cousins, one Harvard researcher is examining the phenomenon from a unique perspective, and trying to understand the economic benefits people receive by relying on such traditional cures.

As reported in a paper published this week in PLoS ONE, Christopher Golden, '05, a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Harvard University Center for the Environment has found that, in the area of northwest Madagascar he studies, people annually receive between $5 and $8 in benefits by using natural medicines.

Though seemingly slight, those benefits add up to between $30 and $45 per household, Golden said, or anywhere from 43 to 63 percent of the median annual income for families in the region.

"We documented people using more than 240 different plant species to treat as many as 82 different illnesses," Golden said. "This data suggests that it can have quite an impact, financially."

It's an impact that may not be limited to Madagascar, or other regions where access to pharmaceuticals is limited.

As part of his analysis, Golden also compared the use of natural remedies with the prices that American consumers might pay if they were purchasing the pharmaceutical equivalent online where prices are typically lower than on pharmacy shelves. To his surprise, the results showed that the average American could save anywhere from 22 to 63 percent of their annual health care bill, simply by using natural medicines.

"If Americans were relying on traditional medicines as much as people in Madagascar, it could save them a major percentage of their health care expenditures," Golden said.

Golden, however, was quick to emphasize that his study only examined the economics of the natural remedies versus pharmaceuticals, not whether they were equally effective.

"What we're trying to do is account for the economic value the local floral bio-diversity provides to people in this area of Madagascar," Golden said. "We're not assuming there is a medical equivalency this study is about the perceived efficacy. The people who live in this region often have taken both pharmaceuticals and traditional medicines many times, but there is a perceived efficacy for these traditional medicines."

Measuring that perceived efficacy involved surveying 1,200 households in and around Maroantsetra, a city in the northeast corner of the island nation, to determine which natural medicines they used.

To establish the economic benefit of each natural remedy, Golden asked whether people would prefer to use the natural or pharmaceutical remedy for a given illness. If, for example, 60 percent of those asked said they preferred the traditional medicine, Golden established its value as being 60 percent of the price of its pharmaceutical cousin.

"Certainly, because there's no proof of medical equivalency between these treatments, it could easily be an over-estimation to establish these values," Golden said. "But the bio-diversity in these regions represents a huge pharmacopeia, and there are many hidden benefits to the use of these sorts of traditional medicines. These medicines aren't being improperly prescribed or mismanaged, and because they've been used for millennia, we know they're not producing any type of negative side effects."

The economic benefits offered by natural medicines, however, may not end at those who rely on them to treat day-to-day ailments.

The corner of Madagascar that Golden studied contains nearly one percent of all the global floral biodiversity, meaning the chance that a novel pharmaceutical might be developed based on the traditional medicines used in the area is relatively high. The value of that drug, Golden said, could range from $300 million to as much as $5.7 billion.

"That raises additional issues, about who benefits from the discovery of these drugs," Golden said. "In the case of the Madagascar Periwinkle, which was used to develop the treatment for childhood leukemia, a foreign drug company came, took the plants to a foreign lab and they are now making billions, but not five cents has made its way back to Madagascar."

While the question of their medical efficacy is still to be answered, Golden knows first-hand why people continue to rely on traditional medicines in at least some cases, they work.

"I have been living here long enough that I've used some of these remedies myself," Golden said. "In one case, some scratches on my leg got infected, and it blew up like a watermelon from my knee to my ankle. My host family went into the forest and came back with what looked like nettles and put them on my leg. It was incredibly itchy, but the swelling went away completely and the pain disappeared. So these treatments really can work."

Could Villaraigosa be America?s first Latino president?

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa walks on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, March 7, 2012. (J. Scott??

LOS ANGELES?When Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa gavels the 2012 Democratic National Convention into session in Charlotte, N.C., this September, his role as prominent cheerleader for President Barack Obama will be clear.

It is less clear, for now, if Villaraigosa has designs on the ultimate convention role in 2016?taking center stage to accept his party's nomination on the final night.

Despite running the country's second largest city and coming from the fastest growing voting demographic in America, the mayor himself is quick to wave off talk of a presidential run.

"The answer is no," Villaraigosa replied when asked by Yahoo News if he wanted to be president one day. "I want to finish this job with a bang. I want to go out with my head up high. I want to say to this city, 'I put everything into this job,'" he added.

"The job I've said to people I would like is I would like to be governor of the state of California," he said. (Paging Jerry Brown.)

It's easy to dismiss Villaraigosa's likelihood of capturing the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, much less the presidency, due to his rocky (and public) personal life, lack of a developed national fundraising base and occasional conflicts with portions of his political base.

But recall that Bill Clinton made it to the Oval Office with the personal baggage of infidelity and Barack Obama became the first nonwhite candidate to achieve the highest office in the land?you can begin to see how Villaraigosa's interest in a 2016 run may yet develop.

Villaraigosa's term as mayor of Los Angeles is up July 1, 2013. He says he will spend his remaining time in office bolstering his accomplishments in crime reduction (a 40.6 percent drop in violent crime, 41 percent drop in homicides), the environment (doubled the Kyoto protocol required reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, bringing them down to 14 percent of 1990 levels in seven years), education (reduced schools defined as "failing" according to state scores from 33 percent to 10 percent), and transportation (more on that later). Charlotte provides an opportunity to start road testing his brand beyond Los Angeles' city limits.

"I think I'm going to take a time out. I'll probably associate with a think tank or a university. I want to write. I want to read. I'll probably speak around the country. I certainly get enough invitations," he said of his immediate post-mayoral plans.

Villaraigosa recently wrapped up a one-year tenure as the head of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he wrangled more than 200 mayors to support his successful push for "America Fast Forward," a federal loan program for transportation infrastructure projects that will allow cities to leverage federal dollars over an extended period of time. Obama signed the expanded program into law as part of the larger transportation bill earlier this month at the White House with Villaraigosa by his side.

Now the mayor's travel is mostly on behalf of the Obama campaign, for which he has done no fewer than 20 either official or campaign related events over the last year at various state party gatherings, fundraisers, constituency group conferences and official policy events. The potential benefits of circling the country to meet party activists and elected officials in key states including Florida, Nevada and New Mexico is lost on no one.

The president's re-election team believes Villaraigosa has been one of its most helpful surrogates on the trail this year in wooing Hispanic voters to come out in greater numbers and deliver an even greater margin of victory for the president among those voters.

He won't be the only Hispanic elected official in the Charlotte spotlight. The Obama convention team announced this morning that 37-year-old San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will deliver the keynote speech on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Nearly 22 million Hispanic Americans are expected to be eligible to vote in the presidential election this year. If the rapid population growth rate among Latinos continues apace, that number will be even greater in 2016.

Villaraigosa is no stranger to political ambition?and its attendant disappointments. He describes his first, unsuccessful attempt at capturing City Hall in 2001 as "audacious." Certainly, a presidential run would be no less so. Fast changing demographics may be his entree into the 2016 conversation, but he is well aware they cannot be the rationale for a candidacy.

"When I ran in 2001, everyone said, 'Antonio, you are going to be mayor one day, why run now?'" Advisers told him the Latino slice of the electorate would not be large enough to deliver him a victory until 2017.

"I said, 'What?' and I just went after everybody. The Latinos said I wasn't Latino enough and not running a Latino campaign," he said. He doesn't see the Latino vote as a monolithic bloc, but he's also never been the only Latino in a race. "Every race I've had, I've always had Latinos in the race. It's interesting."

As with most politicians from outside Washington, D.C., eager to play up centrist credentials, Villaraigosa tends to portray himself as a problem solver.

"I want to be part of a discussion about what I call the radical middle that says the way for us to forge ahead is to move ahead, and you can only do that by taking the best of both views and forge a consensus based on results and putting the nation first," he said.

One example is his stance on the deficit and debt reduction plan put forth by the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles Commission. Democratic Party leaders, including Obama, never fully embraced the commission's 2010 plan, for fear of alienating key constituents over entitlement reforms. Were Villaraigosa in Congress with a chance to vote on Simpson-Bowles, he would support it. "Absolutely," he said, without hesitation. (Paging Nancy Pelosi.)

He also casts a critical eye toward teachers unions.

"I think there are teachers unions around the country realizing they want to improve standards of the profession, improve the quality of their profession, and ultimately attract the best and the brightest to their profession. The vast majority of teachers are dedicated and committed, but I do believe some of our teachers unions, while not the biggest problem, are the most powerful defenders of a broken system." (Paging Randi Weingarten.)

To be sure, this former Southern California ACLU president who has fought against the death penalty and for same sex marriage equality since 1994 will have plenty of data points to share with potential liberal Democratic supporters in Iowa and New Hampshire should he choose to take the plunge.

And he saves his strongest criticism for the Republicans, specifically on immigration.

"For some time I've said this issue of comprehensive immigration reform is not just an issue about immigration or human rights or civil rights, it's about our economy. You take 11 million people from out of the dark and into the light, the think tanks have surmised that you are talking about trillions of dollars infusion into the economy," he said before launching the political attack.

"The far rightward tilt of the Republican Party has marginalized them with Latinos, with women, with African Americans in a way that if they don't change, if they don't move to the center, it will make them the Whig Party of the next millennium," Villaraigosa said.

The mayor has time to sort out his plans for future elected office, be it in Sacramento or Washington. But thinking about that future has already begun.

"I'm not sure the way I've taken on the left and the right is going to endear me in a primary, but I'll be 60 in January. I've been doing this for a while. I don't want to do this if we're not going to be bold and transformative. I just don't want to do it. I'm really comfortable in my skin right now," he said.

Induction cooktop More Details about Induction cooktop here.

Induction Cooktop has become an integral part of many home kitchens. It has already gained popularity among the chefs of large restaurants and hotels. It is now the turn of the housewives to realize the benefits and going for induction cook tops in a large way. Induction cooking has considerably shortened the time it takes to cook. Imagine after a hard day at the work place, you return home and are required to cook for the family. Induction cook tops will do the job in a jiffy.

Besides being incredibly fast, there are other attributes which endears it to both chefs and housewives alike. This includes more heat, accurate temperature control, and also energy savings. This is one of the biggest advantages of induction cooking. Induction cooking heats the actual vessel and there is no heat lost due to convection and radiation. It is also very safe since there is no open flame of gas which can cause fire. Induction cooktop is a common feature in Aircrafts and Spacecrafts because of its safety features. The safety features also makes induction cooktop an ideal feature in households which have children. One of the best features is that the cooktop remains cool even though the contents in the vessel may be boiling hot.

Since the cooktop remains cool, there is no risk of the spills getting charred and the cooktop getting stained. Just wipe off the surface and the induction cooktop become sparkling clean and just like new. Another feature with the induction cooking is that the kitchen remains much cooler since there is no open flame which will heat the surroundings in the kitchen. The kitchen becomes much cooler for cooking.

The conversion from gas cooktop and electricity to induction cooking is not so forthcoming. One of the hindrances in the widespread popularity of induction cooking is the peculiarity of the induction cooking itself. Induction cooking is effected by the electromagnetic induction which heats up the vessel. However the vessel should be ferromagnetic like cast iron or copper in which the electromagnetism can be induced. Another major handicap is that the vessel must have a flat bottom so that it remains in contact with the cooktop. Pots and curved pans cannot be used with induction cook tops. However new and better cooktop are entering the market which has a curved base so that pots and curved pans can also be used for cooking.

Future NBA T-Wolves shine for Russia

Supporters of the US Olympic Dream Team should forgive the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and their supporters for being excited about Russia's 95-75 rout of Britain on Sunday in their Olympic opener.

The Russians' romp included standout performances by guard Alexey Shved, who has signed a deal for next season with the T-wolves, and centre Andrei Kirilenko, reportedly bound for Minnesota after playing in Russia last season.

"If I'm the Minnesota Timberwolves, I've got a big fat smile on my face," Russian coach David Blatt said.

Kirilenko scored 35 points to lead Russia's Group B round-robin triumph while Shved added 16 points and 13 assists. His assists total was three more than Britain's team total and two more than the rest of his teammates combined.

"We will see what Alexey does in the rest of the tournament," Blatt said. "I think that will show if he is ready for the next level. And that was a good start.

"He has that quality of speed and 'break down the defender' ability that defines NBA guards."

That's good news for the Timberwolves, who are coming off a 26-40 season in which they were last in the NBA's Northwest division.

Minnesota also lost Spanish superstar point guard Ricky Rubio to a torn left knee ligament that also kept him out of the Olympics.

Adding Kirilenko could help Shved adjust to life in the NBA, which Kirilenko left behind due to the NBA lockout last year when owners and players argued over money and risked missing an entire season before reducing its length.

"I've always found he plays his best for us," Blatt said of Kirilenko. "When he gets in this environment, his game goes up another level."

British coach Chris Finch liked what he saw of Shved as well, even if it was watching him shred the British defence with precision passing and 6-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

"He will do very well," Finch said. "When you give Shved that freedom (in the NBA) he can work plays for anybody around him."

British captain Luol Deng, an NBA standout for the Chicago Bulls, scored 26 points and former NBA big man Pops Mensah-Bonsu contributed 22 points and nine rebounds for the Olympic hosts.

But the British only managed to make 25 of 75 shots (33 percent), including a woeful 4-of-26 from 3-point range, while the Russians connected on 37-of-59 from the field (63 percent).

Cheney says picking Palin for VP was a mistake

(AP) ? Former Vice President Dick Cheney says it was a mistake for Republican Sen. John McCain to pick Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee.

Cheney says he liked Palin, but that she didn't pass the test of being ready to be president and that McCain's campaign didn't handle the vetting process well.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney is expected to announce a running mate in August. He is widely expected to choose someone perceived as competent but safe.

Cheney, whose own unpopularity was a flashpoint for the Bush administration, says there are two lists that candidates maintain. The bigger list includes politicians who want to be viewed as under consideration to boost their standing. Cheney says a second, much shorter list contains those who are actually being considered.

A Career in Football Coaching

Football is the UK's most popular sport with millions of people playing the game each year. In the last decade or so football has become highly commericalised with huge sums of money being invested in the game. The Premiership for example attracts billions of pounds worth of investment each year. With such investment comes great opportunity as the demand for facilities, players and training staff grows.

In recent years the demand for skilled football coaches has been growing. These talented individuals can help change the fortunes of a team and provide management with a great deal of support and encouragement. Despite such talents these people are often hard to come by and is why you are seeing many clubs turn to retired players for coaching positions. As a result now could be the time to think about training for a career as a coach. A career in this area presents great opportunities and could be just the thing you were looking for. In this article we will share insider knowledge of what life is like as a coach and what you need to become one.

Who Would Suit a Coaching Career?

The most obvious choice would be people who have a real passion but in reality there is a lot more to football coaching these days. Science forms a big part of the game these days as clubs monitor exactly how their players bodies react to certain environments and scenarios. Time is also given to what they eat and a solid understanding of how the body works is required. This is only really applicable to people looking to coach at the top clubs but is a real consideration. If however you are looking to coach young children then a different set of skills are required.

Football coaching careers are undoubtedly difficult to get into and as a result it is good to get into from a young age. Doing this means you can get your badges early and presents opportunities for you to travel abroad to train kids from other countries. If you like to travel and enjoy the outdoors then a football coaching career could be for you but what skills do you need?

What Skills do you need to become a Football Coach?

The first thing you will need to do is take your FA coaching badges. In most cases you will need to take level 1 and 2 and will provide you with the basics of football coaching. Although every budding coach should take these it will only provide the basics and the real skill comes from experience and self learning. Outside of qualifications coaches also need to have the right skills to help develop a player's fitness, technical skills and team working ability. As a result most coaches are outgoing, confident and particular in their approach. As mentioned earlier you could also go abroad to help develop your skills. America is a popular destination for this.

Opportunities

Before embarking on a football coaching career you need to take the time to understand what level you want to train at. This could be for professionals or for school kids. Some people take the teaching assistants route where they can provide classroom support on set subjects while coaching kids football for P.E. The rewards from professional, Premiership standard coaching is much higher than that of kids coaching but the level of focus is much more intense. This is why the top coaches are often in their 30's.

Coaching can also provide a route into management which is an attractive prospect for many. Travel is also an option and the skills learnt from football coaching can be taken into a range of different jobs. The role in itself presents many opportunities and can make a great career choice.

If you are thinking about a career as a football coach then you can expect to earn anywhere between ?24,000 to ?250,000. Coaches are constantly being testing and demands are high. It is essentially a results driven business and is not for everyone.

BMW's C Evolution electric scooter does 62 miles on a charge, maxes out at 75 mph

All things considered, we think it's safe to say BMW very rarely disappoints with its latest road-friendly creations, and one of the outfit's most recent concoctions is this eco-friendly C Evolution electric scooter. According to the German company, the prototype two-wheeler's quite close to hitting its final production stages, noting "it might soon become a part of everyday road traffic in cities throughout the world" and that it is "outstanding in terms of performance, functionality and design." On paper, the C Evolution appears to be rather promising, with BMW also claiming the environmental hog can ride out about 62 miles on a single charge -- all while being able to reach max speeds of around 75 mph. No word yet on how much you'll have to save up for one of these, but for now, there's a video of the C Evo in action waiting on you just past the break.

In recent months I?ve interviewed quite a few successful self-starter internet marketers. People like Farnoosh Brock, Brian Moran, Chris Guillebeau, and Adam Baker, all tell stories from the first few years of their online business where they were doing everything by themselves.

Tim Ferriss popularized the concept of outsourcing your entire life to other people so ? Read the rest of this entry ?

U.S. fears Syria plotting a massacre

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - The United States said it feared a massacre in Aleppo after President Bashar al-Assad's forces launched ground and air bombardments in preparation for a major onslaught against rebels in Syria's commercial capital.

Insurgents targeted army roadblocks and security installations, with both sides avoiding close-quarters warfare in the northern city of 2.5 million people, Syria's biggest urban centre.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush a rebellion that began 16 months ago.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Troops stationed on the outskirts of the city unleashed barrages of heavy-calibre mortar rounds on the western neighborhoods of Saladin, al-Sukkari and al-Fardos, while Russian-built MI-25 helicopter gunships struck al-Sakhour in the east with rockets, opposition activists in the city said.

The heavy fighting around Aleppo follows an audacious bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus on July 18 and led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

RISING CASUALTIES

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer outfit was killed near a park in Saladin. His body was placed in a mosque pending identification.

Thirty-four people were killed in and around Aleppo on Thursday, according to opposition activists.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

"There is lots of internal displacement, and schools have been turned to makeshift shelters that are packed. One shell hitting a school will result in a catastrophe," he said.

"The regime is massing troops and tanks at the entrances of Aleppo, but it seems it is for now content with bombarding the city, with the rebels constantly on the move."

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels attacked a security outpost in the neighborhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to the Aleppo city centre, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the centre. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey from which the Syrian army has withdrawn in recent weeks to focus on urban areas where relatively lightly armed rebels have hunkered down.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, although it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

Reuters has learned that the White House has crafted a presidential directive, called a "finding," that would authorize greater covert assistance for the rebels, while still stopping short of arming them.

It is not clear whether President Barack Obama has signed the document, and U.S. officials declined to comment on the finding, which is a highly classified authorization for covert activity.

UNITING THE OPPOSITION

A Syrian parliamentarian representing the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she had defected to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubberstamp assembly elected in May and dominated by President Bashar al-Assad's Baath Party to defect.

"I have crossed to Turkey and defected from this tyrannical regime ... because of the repression and savage torture against a nation demanding the minimum of rights," Ikhlas al-Badawi told Sky News Arabia.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, has put himself forward as someone who could help unify the opposition inside and outside Syria on a plan for a transfer of power.

Tlas, speaking in a newspaper interview in the Saudi city of Jeddah, also said he was looking for support from Saudi Arabia and other powers. "I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," Tlas told Thursday's edition of Asharq al-Awsat.

Tlas went on to Turkey and met Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. [ID:nL6E8IQNPT] Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, has a heavy strategic stake in shaping any post-Assad leadership in neighboring Syria.

Tlas appeared briefly with Davutoglu at an official guest house but made no statement.

Turkey closed its border posts with Syria on Wednesday to all traffic except Syrian refugees.

Russia, one of the few remaining allies of the authoritarian Assad, whose family has run Syria for 42 years, said calls for him to quit power were hindering efforts to end the conflict.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said such calls, led by the United States, Turkey and other Western and Arab nations, were fanning violence. He reiterated Moscow's contention that support for Syrian rebel groups was tantamount to backing terrorism.

Germany said Russian and Chinese backing for Syria was a big problem. "For this reason we urge them to recognize that the time of the Assad regime is over," Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told German TV.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) ? The news director of an Iowa-based NBC affiliate said Thursday that the station would turn over footage of its interview with the mother of one of two missing cousins after authorities served a subpoena that claimed it could help their investigation.

Waterloo-based KWWL-TV announced Wednesday night that it received the subpoena seeking "raw video" of interviews conducted last week with Misty Morrissey and Wylma Cook and made the document public on its website.

News director Dan Schillinger said Thursday the station was in the process of giving authorities its full interview with Misty Morrissey, which has been available on its website. Cook was standing next to Morrissey during the interview, but she didn't speak. The station does not have any additional footage because its policy is to get rid of outtakes, Schillinger said.

"I think they are trying to leave no stone unturned," he said of investigators.

The subpoena application, filed Monday by Black Hawk County Attorney Thomas Ferguson, says the footage is needed so his office can conduct a "complete investigation" into the disappearance of 10-year-old Lyric Cook and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins.

The girls disappeared July 13 after taking a bike ride in Evansdale while their grandmother, Wylma Cook, was babysitting them. An extensive search involving local, state and federal investigators has failed to find them.

Authorities classified the case as abduction after a search by divers using sonar equipment ruled out the possibility their bodies might be recovered in an Evansdale near where their bikes were found. Investigators have focused attention on Lyric's parents, Daniel and Misty Morrissey, who have a long history of being involved in drugs, but have not called them suspects.

The July 20 interview with Misty Morrissey being sought by authorities came days after the family said she had stopped cooperating with investigators or speaking to the news media, citing an attorney's advice.

During the interview, Morrissey told KWWL-TV reporter John Wilmer that she and her estranged husband sought legal advice after they were accused during lengthy interrogations of having involvement in the girls' disappearance. With her mother, Wylma Cook, standing next to her, she called it a "pretty intense coercion" and said the scrutiny was probably the result of her criminal record.

"They don't have anything else. We've been to a briefing last night. There's no other information, no new leads, no evidence, there's nothing," she said. "After seven days, I realize it's probably very frustrating for them that they probably haven't been able to come up with something. It's frustrating for us as well."

Ferguson said investigators sought the footage at a time when Misty Morrissey had stopped cooperating with them. On Monday, she resumed talking to investigators and took a second polygraph test.

"Law enforcement wants to be aware of what it is they are commenting or talking about, especially in situations where they had publicly indicated they were not going to be cooperative," he said.

KWWL ? whose letters stand for "Keep Watching Waterloo" ? has aggressively covered the case. Its veteran 10 p.m. anchor, Ron Steele, beat other reporters by an hour on July 20 by tweeting news that an FBI dive team had not found the girls' bodies in the lake. Its live interview earlier that day with Misty Morrissey also was seen as a scoop.

Schillinger said the story has "occupied the lion's share of our resources" for nearly two weeks. He said crews were at Meyers Lake almost nonstop for several days, and have been working long days in the summer heat to bring its viewers the latest information.

"We hope for a positive resolution," he said. "We hope the girls are found and that they are safe and sound and we're doing everything we can to help."

Munich widows call for Olympic ceremony protest

LONDON (AP) ? The widows of two Israeli Olympians killed by Palestinian gunmen at the 1972 Munich Olympics are urging spectators to stage a silent protest during Friday's opening ceremony for the London Games.

Ankie Spitzer and Ilana Romano are demanding that London organizers recognize their husbands' deaths and honor them at Olympic Stadium 40 years after the slayings.

The two women have asked audience members to stand in silence when International Olympic Committee chief Jacques Rogge rises to speak at Friday's ceremony. Since Olympic organizers have rejected a moment of silence for the 11 slain Israeli athletes and coaches, the widows say the silent protest will be a victory in their fight to have the men remembered at the proper place and time.

"They were not accidental tourists," Spitzer told reporters Wednesday, her hoarse voice rising with indignation. "They came with dreams and came home in coffins."

The 1972 Munich Olympics were the first held in Germany since the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, and was designed to blot out the tainted images of competition in Nazi Germany. But in the second week, the Black September militant group penetrated the laxly secured village and took Israeli team members hostage. Within a day of Sept. 5, 11 died.

The games were briefly suspended, but the Olympics were forever changed. Security costs soared and just kept rising with every games.

For Spitzer and Romano, it was a simpler time. Ankie Spitzer and her fencing coach husband, Andrei, had just had a daughter, Anouk, who is also pressing the fight for the silent protest. They say Andrei was thrilled to be an Olympian and firmly believed in the higher goals of the games.

Ilana Romano, meanwhile, had had a bad feeling about her husband Yossef's trip to the games. Romano, Israel's middleweight weightlifting champion, had injured his knee and dropped out after the clean-and-jerk event. He was set to return to Israel on Sept. 6 for an operation.

Romano tried to escape during the siege. Although injured and using crutches, Romano lunged at one of his captors, slashing him with a paring knife and grabbing his gun. Another militant shot him, and he was left to bleed to death in front of his bound teammates.

The widows took their message to the public in a news conference Wednesday, saying they were tired of hearing about how the hands of the IOC are tied by protocol. They hope that the IOC notices ? and decides to act.

Nor were they moved by a tribute Monday at the athletes' village, when Rogge in a surprise move led a solemn minute of silence. They are also not satisfied by the plan to honor the slain at a private reception in London on Aug. 6.

The IOC says the opening ceremony is not an appropriate arena to remember the dead, despite pressure from politicians in the United States, Israel and Germany. A committee started by a Jewish organization in Rockland, New York, has gathered more than 100,000 signatures for the moment of silence and count President Barack Obama among their supporters.

IOC spokesman Mark Adams defended the organization and Rogge, saying that it recognizes the deaths as a dark time for the Olympics.

"We are marking the moment in a number of ways that we think are the most appropriate," Adams told The Associated Press. "The President made a moving speech in the village, there will be a ceremony next week in cooperation with the Israeli NOC where the president will speak and we will mark the exact anniversary in Munich ....The IOC will mark and will continue to mark the darkest moment in its history."

The families flatly reject the official reasons they've been given over the years for why this cannot happen. At Montreal, they said they were told the reason was that the Arabs would leave. At Barcelona, it was about an unwillingness to bring politics to the games. At Atlanta, the reason was protocol. At Athens, organizers said it was not the appropriate time.

The widows ask: Would they face the same problem if the athletes were the U.S. Dream Team? Or any other country?

"They came from the wrong country and the wrong religion," Spitzer said at the news conference.

Now is the time, they say. And they promise that if the IOC keeps saying no, they will keep fighting, to the next generation if necessary. They met with Rogge later Wednesday to present the petition.

"We are outraged, we are angry, we are sad," Spitzer said of Rogge's refusal of their request.

Romano and Spritzer say the years have only strengthened their resolve. They note that organizers in Vancouver held a moment of silence at the opening ceremony for Nodar Kumaritashvili, a Georgian luger killed during a high-speed training run in Whistler just hours before the opening of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

The families say the circumstances may be different but the principle is the same. The Olympics should honor their own, the members of the so-called "Olympic Family." They say the Olympics are just not like anything else ? they are about sportsmanship, peace, goodwill. And when the Israeli athletes were attacked, the entire Olympic movement was too.

"It is not just a competition," Spitzer said. "It is an idea."

New evidence for regular magnitude 8 earthquakes, study of New Zealand fault shows

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? A new study published in the journal Science, co-authored by University of Nevada, Reno's Glenn Biasi and colleagues at GNS Science in New Zealand, finds that very large earthquakes have been occurring relatively regularly on the Alpine Fault along the southwest coastline of New Zealand for at least 8,000 years.

The Alpine Fault is the most hazardous fault on the South Island of New Zealand, and about 80 miles northwest of the South Island's main city of Christchurch.

The team developed evidence for 22 earthquakes at the Hokuri Creek site, which, with two additional from nearby, led to the longest continuous earthquake record in the world for a major plate boundary fault. The team established that the Alpine Fault causes, on average, earthquakes of around a magnitude 8 every 330 years. Previous data put the intervals at about 485 years.

Relative motion of Australian and Pacific plates across the Alpine Fault averages almost an inch per year. This motion builds up, and then is released suddenly in large earthquakes. The 530-mile-long fault is among the longest, straightest and fastest moving plate boundary faults in the world. More than 23 feet of potential slip has accumulated in the 295 years since the most recent event in A.D. 1717.

Biasi, working with the GNS Science team led by Kelvin Berryman, used paleoseismology to extend the known seismic record from 1000 years ago to 8,000 years ago. They estimated earthquake dates by combining radiocarbon dating leaves, small twigs and marsh plants with geologic and other field techniques.

"Our study sheds new light on the frequency and size of earthquakes on the Alpine Fault. Earthquakes have been relatively periodic, suggesting that this may be a more general property of simple plate boundary faults worldwide," Biasi, of the Nevada Seismological Laboratory said. "By comparison, large earthquakes on California's San Andreas Fault have been less regular in size and timing."

"Knowing the average rate of earthquakes is useful, but is only part of the seismic hazard equation," he said. "If they are random in time, then the hazard does not depend on how long it has been since the most recent event. Alpine Fault earthquakes are more regular in their timing, allowing us to use the time since the last earthquake to adjust the hazard estimate. We estimate the 50-year probability of a large Alpine fault earthquake to be about 27 percent."

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake centered near Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, caused extensive damage to buildings on Sept. 2, 2010, and no deaths. On Feb. 22, 2011, a triggered aftershock measuring magnitude 6.3, with one of the strongest ground motions ever recorded worldwide in an urban area, struck the city killing 185 people.
