Spring has sprung: Cougars open baseball season on the road

WSU baseball kicks off its season this weekend as they play a three-game series against Western Carolina at Catamounts? campus in Cullowhee, N.C. Games will be held Feb. 15-17, Friday at 1 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m., and Sunday at 9 a.m.

The Cougars are 238-215 under head coach Donnie Marbut, assisted by Gregg Swenson, Pat Waer, Michael Naughton and Scott Parrish.

?It?s been good, we?ve been healthy for the most part, we?ve been having great weather, and we?re just like everybody else,? Marbut said. ?We?re excited to get going and play someone else in a different colored uniform.?

Western Carolina ended their season 32-24 going 19-7 at home last spring. Overall, the team ended with .963 fielding percentage, and .268 batting average.

?They?re well-coached for one,? Marbut said. ?A couple of good conferences, SoCon (Southern Conference) is always a good conference. They?re projected to win it, they?ve got 56 starters back so every guy that started last year is back in the rotation.?

Sophomore Tanner Chleborad will open this season for the Cougars and pitch in Friday?s game. Sophomore Joe Pistorese will pitch on Saturday, and redshirt sophomore Scott Simon pitches on Sunday.

?Joe and Tanner basically were in the rotation for the most part the entire season,? Marbut said. ?Scott Simon?s up, he?ll be our Sunday guy, he?s as experienced as the other guys.?

Overall, the Cougars return with six pitchers who started last season. WSU should be solid defensively as well since they set the school record for fielding percentage at .978 last season.

?There are really four guys that redshirted last year,? Marbut said. ?Nick Tanielu, Ben Roberts, Brett Jacobs and Trace Tam Sing. They all redshirted for different reasons, so they?ll all start, but Brett has a little bit of a foot thing right now, but if he?s healthy they?ll all start probably game one.?
