Warning: Possible spoilers for the?"Star Trek" sequel ahead.

Everyone thought it was going to be Khan, but word on the ?Star Trek? sequel front suggests the movie's villain may be someone else.

The news came --perhaps accidentally -- when actor Karl Urban, who plays?Dr. McCoy,?was promoting his other film, ?Dredd 3D,? at an international press junket. Urban was asked by SFX?about the work of Benedict Cumberbatch, who many thought would be playing the villainous Khan.

?He?s awesome, he?s a great addition,? said Urban. ?I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.?

Um, oops?

The character of Mitchell appeared in the original "Star Trek" series episode, ?Where No Man Has Gone Before,??as an old acquaintance-turned-ruthless-adversary of Captain Kirk.?

This alleged slip-up comes after photos were released from the ?Star Trek? set in February, showing Cumberbatch's character dramatically battling Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Uhura (Zoe Saldana)?while wearing?a Starfleet uniform.

Actor Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the films,?has already said Khan isn't the film's villain.

?It?s not Khan,? Pegg told The Telegraph. ?That?s a myth. Everyone?s saying it is, but it?s not.?

Some fans, however, believe?that?Urban's supposed leak is part of?a giant conspiracy, an intentional bluff intended to prove everyone the fool while the world lingers on details surrounding the film, set to be released in May 2013.

?This is just one of those non-stories that's just going to get disproved down the line again, isn't it?? a reader going by Ian Ponsford writes on SFX.

Yet, there seems to be another possibility.

??(It) would explain why he's been seen wearing the black Starfleet undershirt I suppose. But seeing the whole Gary Mitchell thing has been done in the comics, I cannot see them going over it again,? reader Kahless notes.?I don't think Cumberbatch is playing Mitchell or Khan, I'd be surprised if he is playing any character we already know.?
