Famine anniversary: Somalis dying on food walks

(AP) ? The long, dusty walks from hungry homes to far-away refugee camps are again claiming lives in Somalia one year after an estimated 100,000 people died in the country's worst famine in generations.

Two lethal factors are again combining to send families fleeing from south-central Somalia: Too little rain and too many guns.

In a cruel replay of last year's long walks, many families who left refugee camps to go home earlier this year as the crisis eased and attempted to plant food are now forced to return to the camps where they will live in stick huts covered by scraps of cloth.

Some 12 million people needed assistance at the height of last year's famine. This year the U.N. says 2.5 million people are in crisis and in need of aid to survive.
